What are AI Literacy Levels?

The Belmont AI Literacy Framework defines five progressive levels of student engagement with AI. Rather than treating AI as a single skill, the framework builds competence step by step — from a student's first encounter with AI tools all the way to leading peers and shaping practice in their field.

Each assignment you generate is anchored to one of these levels, giving students a structured path to grow across the semester.

How to choose: Select all five for a full beginner-to-advanced arc. If your students already have AI experience, deselect Level 1 (Explorer) or Level 2 (Steward). For a focused unit rather than a full-semester progression, pick only the levels that match your learning objectives.

1 · Explorer?Example: Students use ChatGPT to define three key terms from a reading, then verify each definition against their textbook. Low-stakes, introductory work. Students have never used AI. Start here with low-stakes introductions.

2 · Steward?Example: Students write a prompt asking AI to summarize an industry article, refine the prompt twice, then verify the result against a credible source and cite it. Students learn to use AI ethically, refine prompts, and cite properly.

3 · Analyst?Example: Students have AI analyze a case study, identify two assumptions or gaps in its analysis, then write their own analysis alongside the AI's. Students fact-check AI, compare it to their own analysis, and spot gaps.

4 · Innovator?Example: Students use AI to design a workflow that addresses a real problem in their field, documenting their prompts, the AI's contributions, and their own modifications. Students use AI to solve real problems and design better workflows.

5 · Pathfinder?Example: Students develop a one-page guideline for ethical AI use in their discipline, using AI as a thinking partner, then critique and refine it for the class. Students lead AI conversations, mentor peers, and propose guidelines.
